Closing Date and Time
22nd June, 2011 At 11:59 P.M. (Mid-Night)
Topic/Area for Discussion
“Conflict and Negotiation”

Mr. Shahid Khan recently joined Al-Shafi pharmaceutical company as a CEO. The company is facing many serious crises but one of the most hazardous is the conflict between production and marketing departments. Both the departments are blaming each other for declining sales. In first meeting with Mr. Shahid Khan , the production manager complaints about the erroneous forecasting of demand where as the marketing manager complaints about the unnecessary delay in supply of demanded medicines. Mr. Shahid Khan has to resolve the conflict between production manager and marketing manager as it is causing serious financial losses.

Q. What are the ways Mr. Shahid can use to resolve the conflict between production manager and marketing manager?

Solution:

Techniques to transform competitive conflict into cooperative
Here are some of the methods and techniques to transform competitive conflict into cooperative conflict.
1. Choose Language with Care
2. Assign Joint Tasks
3. Expand the Pipe
4. Establish ground rules for civility in communication.
5. Create or focus on a common enemy
6. Point out areas of agreement
7. Focus blame away from the disputant and towards process
8. Prepare “the case”
9. Use trust –building exercises
10. Set up structure to create sharing of information

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Mr. Shahid should point out areas of agreement between both the managers and try to put their focus on a common problem which is actually the main issue of the company. He must try to bring them to a common point and assign them a duty to conduct an problem evaluation and suggest their solutions. He can easily solve the problem by setting up a structure to create sharing of information.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I really feel it's the production department..I really do. It's delays in the company itself! It's management,they will not stop causing conflicts with production workers
[ layman] If the inside layman has issues,well? For some reason,I don't know if it's bad management and/or the top people but it may lay within the prod.co. for delays. Does someone want delays?

Does someone have financial gain for delays. I am just an observer with nothing to gain nor lose,but with out all the bombardments and all the others things not in my view,the trees in the forrest thing. I see that's usually the problem- full steam ahead.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

As a CEO of Al.Shafi International Pharmaceutical Company Mr.Shahid can use the following ways to resolve the conflict.

► Communication
He must do the conversation and listen the issues of both the managers and try to find out the basic reason of creating the conflict.

► Trying to resolve interpersonal relationship of both managers
He should take step to resolve the interpersonal relation of production & marketing manager so that they can easily communicate with each other to handle the problems they face during production and sales.

► Market Survey to know about the conditions of demand & supply of medicines in market.
Mr.Shahid himself should do a market survey to know about the demand & supply conditions of medicines to make decision that who is among both of them(Production & marketing) Managers are right and wrong.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The resolution of the conflict is detailed investigation of the matter. It would be fault of the both sides or one of them. Both marketing department also needs to convey the orders to the production house in correct figures with EDD (Estimated Delivery Date) and the production department also should deliver the order in correct quantity as and when required.

So Mr Shahid should go to look as the order taken by the marketing department and personally convey the order to the production department with the required dead line date with quantity. After that keep following the production department for timely production and than delivering the same to marketing for the delivery in time.

So Mr Shahid has to make the smooth communication way between departments and keeping an eye so both the departments may work in the favor of company.
