Top management at company A was concerned about manufacturing new and innovative products. Therefore, the company assembled a creative team by hiring new people who could work with the production department to design or add new features to their existing products. This team required open communication necessary for innovation, whereas production employees at company A were used to mass production of a standard product, hence they kept their opinion to themselves. An initial challenge identified was to ensure open communication and free flow of ideas between the design team and the production team. 

REQUIREMENTS: 

As an external consultant you are required to: 

1. Identify the level of communication (using Johari Window) most likely to occurbetween the design and production team. (2 marks) 
Also provide 2 justifying reasons for your choice (in bullet points) (1.5 marks each) 

2. After determining the problem area, next identify how you would deal with design and production team, to change their interpersonal style behaviorally and to ensure open communication and free flow of ideas in teams (2.5 marks each)

According to johari Window the level of communication is found in the closed are.

Reasons:
The company hired new employees so there lack of open communication and didn't know each others.
The existing employees kept their opinion to their opinion to themselves and didn't share with the new employees

Conduct routine company meetings on a monthly or quarterly basis. Schedule meetings when the majority of employees can attend. Offer information on company performance, new initiatives and areas that need attention. Use the meetings as a platform for open dialogue and questions between employers, management and staff.

Establish a news and information system for daily or as-needed updates. This system should offer encouragement as well as practical information to assist employees with their work. Informed employees strengthen employer-to-employee communication.

Publish contact information for all employers that all employees can access. Encourage employees to contact the appropriate employer with ideas, suggestions and concerns. This method will improve employee-to-employer communication.

Promote casual conversations between employers and employees. Have employers routinely walk around in common employee work and lounge areas and initiate conversations and welcome employee-led conversations. This openness lowers the perceived distance between ranks and fosters an environment of mutual respect and open communication.

Maintain open dialogue during crisis situations. Uncertainty and stress can undermine recovery from a business crisis. Offer face-to-face communications and honesty during stressful periods to gain employee trust and foster communication that can help alleviate current problems and improve long-term company-wide communications.
